Jiffy Group joins Green Chemistry Campus Community

Jiffy recently joined the Green Chemistry Campus Community. Jiffy, internationally active in the horticultural sector, develops and produces innovative and sustainable substrates and cultivation systems. As a Netherlands-based organisation, this year Jiffy participated in the third edition of the BioVoice program that links questions from large companies to solutions from SMEs. At the Campus, Jiffy is looking for biobased materials as a raw material for potting soil and other substrate applications.

Sustainable fibre alternatives

As a leading supplier of biobased-pots, pellets, coir products, substrates and plugs, Jiffy is continuously building on their green qualities to be a truly sustainable company. That is why Jiffy is currently looking for sustainable fibre alternatives.

Most potting soil currently consists largely of peat. The advantage of this material is that it holds water and air very effectively, is light-weight and provides a neutral base which allows for customization of the nutrient package for every growing scenario. The disadvantage is that peat is a non-renewable resource.

For a long time, Jiffy have been working to expand their portfolio of raw materials and products, as demonstrated by their coconut coir production facilities. With the recent launch of their new Sustainability Report & Five-Year Plan, Jiffy is prioritising the need for more local and circular materials. Whether they are alternatives to peat, mineral fertilisers or additives that increase plant resilience to pests and diseases. Jiffy is therefore looking for biobased alternatives.

Tara Duggan, Product Innovator at Jiffy: “We at Jiffy are excited to join the community at the Green Chemistry Campus as this community are actively looking at biomaterials, not as a waste as it has been seen it in the past, but as a resource that we can unlock once we have the right tools to do so. We look forward to exploring the potential of these products for the horticulture industry and creating more local and circular solutions for our customers.”
