Progression Industry files patent: using lignin for liquid fuel composition

Green Chemistry Campus tenant Michael Boot from Progression Industry has recently successfully filed a patent for using lignin for liquid fuel composition.

Michael Boot explains his invention: "Lignin is an hitherto unvalorized side stream that falls free in the production of cellulosic ethanol. This effluent is both inexpensive and sulfur-free, which makes it an attractive candidate to produce sustainable transport fuels. When cracked, be it via catalysis, pyrolysis or other means, the resulting oil comprises mainly phenolics, the use of which as a fuel, be it in neat form or blended with bunker fuel, is protected by this patent."

Technical animations of the fuel and production process in question can be found on the YouTube channel of Progression Industry.
